The Faith of Beasts
Second book in the series, I was glad to return to it.
I don’t have a lot to say about it, it advanced the overall plot - but also felt like an incremental progress. Perhaps one of those books that will feel different when you can binge a whole series instead of “wait for the next episode”.
The series core is an interesting dilemma, as a captive of an extreme power - what is the right response? Resist? Collaborate? Hide one’s strength and bide one’s time? For how much time? Days? Generations?
I like that the series plays with these questions and drives you towards what feel like easy answers before pulling them back.
This issue advances the plot, pulls the curtain back some more on the universe, plays with its premise some more but resolves very little.
I do think this series will ultimately survive or fall on its end answer to some of these questions. There are rich literatures on those drowned and saved under impossible odds. Many of the best leave little rooms of Hollywood narratives of cathartic heroism. It will be interested to see what it decides the answer is to surviving against unsurmountable odds.
None the less for now, it’s an interesting journey to accompany this group of now familiar characters trying to build the picture and wrestle with it in real time.
